Element 1

UCSC received the Finnigan MAT Element ICP-MS in January 1995, the first academic institution in the US to install one. I would guess that we have run for more hours, analyzed more diverse sample types, and had more users on the instrument than any other Element lab.

The magnetic sector mass spectrometer, in addition to providing high resolution capabilities, has a fairly linear mass response curve that is much less affected by sample matrix than quadrapole instruments. This has allowed us to do all sorts of analyses in low-res (R=300) mode, including Pb isotope ratios and routine rock and carbonate (coral, foram, etc.) analysis with better precision and accuracy than we ever expected.

We have conventional sample introduction equipment: concentric and micro-concentric nebulizers from Glass Expansion and ESI; cooled Scott-type double pass and cyclonic spray chambers in glass and Teflon; and fixed and demountable torches. We also have a CETAC AX-100 autosampler, ESI Apex HF, ESI ACM, ESI Spiro, CETAC USN-5000 Ultrasonic nebulizer, and CETAC MCN-6000.

We are in the process of acquiring funding for a Thermo Element XR, as well as a New Wave UP193FX Excimer laser ablation system.
