Summary of Expertise

Physical oceanography with emphases on air-sea interaction and surface currents; Special expertise with the operations and use of high frequency (HF) radar systems for mapping ocean surface currents.

Research Interests

Air-sea interactions; biological connectivity issues in the California Current System; application of High Frequency (HF) radar systems for ocean surface current mapping and vessel detection.

Biography, Education and Training

Jeffrey D. Paduan received his Ph.D. in physical oceanography from Oregon State University in December, 1987. At present he is Dean of Research at the Naval Postgraduate School and a Board of Trustee member of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. His background involves study of upper ocean currents and air-sea interaction. In recent years, Dr. Paduan has been principal investigator for a series of projects around Monterey Bay that have brought together observations, modeling, and data assimilation of circulation and ecosystem responses. He is a leader in the use of high frequency (HF) radar systems for monitoring ocean surface currents. Dr. Paduan is the co-author of 54 publications and numerous technical reports related to the physics of the upper ocean.
